Abigail O’Neill is a superwoman, supermom, superfriend, superfood guru, supergorgeous chocolate goddess and supermodel to top it all off. I haven’t had the pleasure of meeting her in person, YET (but will one day, SOON!), as we met through this crazy thing we call the internet, over 5 years ago! We connected instantly, and even without ever meeting her, I consider her a beautiful friend of mine. You will witness throughout this interview just how special she is, words escape me to describe her gorgeous soul. She embodies the term, beauty from the inside out, as her heart is pure gold, yet she RADIATES like no one else I’ve ever met. Not only is she a mom of 3 (!) SERIOUSLY ABI, she is a model, which only came to fruition after the birth of her children (any and all dreams are possible). She is such an inspiration to me, as she forages through her beautiful Australian Oasis picking fruits, nuts and greens straight out of her back yard. She LIVES Organically to the core, and feeds her family nothing but pure, organic, superfood goodness. If it didn’t come from the earth, it will not be consumed, something I whole-heartedly believe and live.
ON top of this all she is a recent author, having written the insanely, supergorgeous book MODEL CHOCOLATE, which I was blessed enough to receive a copy straight from her beautiful hands. Hi Abigail, tell us a little bit about yourself! Where did you grow up, how did you get to where you are now and what are your favorite hobbies ? Hi Life By Leese peoples! I actually moved around a lot growing up, all within Australia though. My mum is Portuguese and my Dad all Aussie. I have been busy since those early years; getting married, having children, growing wheatgrass, baking bread and all manner of things, organic gardening and lately enjoying a bit of modelling and lots of inspirational sharing via abigailoneill.net as well as helping to indulge many through my latest book creation – Model Chocolate. How has being a mom, wife + model shaped who you are as a person? It’s kept me very real as I did it all back to front, so I’ve spent a lot of time before starting modelling being an ‘Aussie battler’ so to speak! It’s a phrase meaning you know what it is to struggle a little bit. Being a young mother has kept me very young at heart! Becoming a model has allowed me to experience some pretty cool things, and express my artistic self too.
IF you could be ANYTHING what would it be? Everything I am now, PLUS a (do it five hours a day) Yogi <3 Oh I so wish to be flexible and bendy!
What inspires you on a daily basis? Instagram. Love that place. I’m a very visual person, and I love taking pictures and seeing pictures.
Would you consider yourself a healthy foodie or do you try to maintain a balance between healthy eating and indulging (80% healthy, 20% treats)? Yes and no. I don’t believe in cheating ever. I’m an all healthy kind of person. Good thing is my whole diet is nourished by the most decadently delicious creations, so there’s no need to indulge in things which make me feel lethargic or guilty afterwards. Model Chocolate is a reflection of that.
What is your non-negotiable when it comes to your diet? Chocolate is an everyday occurrence. Apart from that of course, lots of raw food, including superfoods. Greens (piles of these please!), fresh organic fruits and vegetables.
What does a day in the life of Abigail look like? (foodwise) Mountains of fresh fruits. Green juice or green smoothie or vegetable juice if I’m lucky, large fresh organic salad at least once, my chocolate, sweet or regular potato chippies (dry baked on racks, love these!) or sushi or a rice dish, legumes maybe once or twice weekly, softly poached organic eggs occasionally. Did I say chocolate? Haha. Superfoods such as goji berries, bee pollen, maqui berry powder, acai, maca root, spirulina, wheatgrass, incaberries, green tea, yerba mate, chia seeds, lots of others.
How do you manage to stay so fit and healthy, especially when you are so, so busy? Please share with us your dietary + fitness philosophy I don’t. Realistically this has been the hardest thing for me to make happen!! It’s a wonder with all the chocolate I’ve had to taste test and live on that I’m not all blubbery. See the chocolate actually works! (Cacao is known to boost metabolism)
So the fitness side of me is getting a major makeover this year. I’ve been so busy with my book the last 3 years, and something has to give, only I mustn’t make any more excuses, really it only takes 20mins to go for a walk! I do love to surf, and do this with my family every week at least once. I’ve started practicing yoga in the mornings again 20mins 2 x weekly, and just started doing some power walking on the other days! <3
Favorite workout/sport? Surfing!
Top health tip? Alkalize.
Introvert or extrovert? Definitely extrovert.
What we’d be surprised to find in your refrigerator? ‘The Beetroot Stuff’ its so amaze. This awesome raw beetroot dip/spread/stuff that you whiz up in the blender and put on EVERYTHING. The recipe’s on my blog.
Do you drink green juices and smoothies? What is your all time favorite? Huge yes. My favourite lately (I have many) has been a combo of banana, frozen raspberries, coconut water, baby spinach leaves, frozen mango from my tree, and raw vegan protein powder by Sunwarrior. I then top the whole smoothie with about ½ cup fresh passionfruit pulp and drink. A-MAZZE.
What are your healthy food staples and ones that you eat everyday? Raw chocolate. Atm, fresh organic bananas. Mangoes, passionfruit or some exotic fruit, avocados, superfoods like goji berries and cacao nibs, coconut, rocket or other leafy greens, and potato, brown rice or quinoa. I eat very seasonally. Through Summer there were so many tomatoes at the organic markets, so I practically lived on them! I think it really gives your body a chance to immerse itself in the nutrients of that particular food.
What are your top 5 beauty products that you use everyday? Cacao butter, coconut oil, essential oils of Frankincense, and lavender, and a bath salts recipe found in my book, so amazing to soak life’s worries away!!
Artist who inspires you? Love food artists. Also fashion, nature. Nature is the most inspiring art ever.
Top 3 Favorite books that had an impact on your life? Back to Eden (because i read it when I was 14!), Vogue Italia – the first time I saw that I was in la la land, and The Bible, never fails to dissapoint.
Top indulgence? Agghh! Going to sound like a broken record Lisa haha my CHOCOLATE! Nah seriously is. Maybe one day I’ll move onto something less intensely captivating.
Favorite city/country to travel to? The ones I have yet to see.
Favorite scent/perfume? 100% pure organic essential oils. Loving Jasmine with vanilla and mint!! Soo good.
Favorite designer? Mary Katrantzou was in 2012/13, this year I haven’t had much of a chance to look at anything!
Ultimate healthy meal: Greens from my garden with herbed dried organic black olives, pesto, oven dry baked potatoes and The Beetroot Stuff.
Ultimate decadent meal: Chocolate fondue! With strawberry guavas, grapes, mango, kiwifruit, jackfruit, persimmons, blueberries and strawberries.
Your favorite, not so healthy treat: Don’t have one.
Greatest movie of all time: The Sound of Music – I still love it. Closely followed by the Titanic in which I cried for 24 hours.
3 things on your bucket list: Yoga myself daily, travel to Europe, write another incredulous cookbook.
Latest inspiration: This interview!!! I need to go do some Yoga now.
How do you think we can make the world a better place? Love more, consume less, eat real food, organic, fairtrade food, especially our chocolate choices, if we all stopped buying non-organic fairtrade chocolate ever, ever again it would really help the earth!
Where do you see yourself in 10 years? In our beautiful home here on the North Coast of Australia (near Byron Bay – pretty hard to leave that!), only it would have a new kitchen and a whole thriving organic blueberry orchard. We would break it up with stints to Europe, surfing daily and I’d certainly be creating something. Who knows what – I live to create!
