RECIPE: HAZELNUT MYLK MATCHA LATTE

I couldn’t stand green tea for a very long time, it was the most bitter and earthy thing I’d ever tasted in liquid form. It wasn’t until I started to heal from Lyme Disease in 2012/early 2013 that I began to appreciate this beauticious liquid in all its glory. At first it was out of necessity as I had quit coffee for a span of two years, to re-alkalize my body in a major way. It wasn’t that coffee was / is bad (it’s truly not!), I just knew that to do some very deep healing I had to let it go. Yes, it was a sad day as I love a good strong Americano. I didn’t know if I would ever be able to reintroduce it back into my life, so the green leaf became my best friend. I learned to like it, and it was a rocky relationship to start.

But the more I learned about its healing properties, its potent dose of antioxidants it made each sip that much sweeter. I also found a green tea that I fell in love with in every way. Now I don’t go a day without drinking Genmaicha , which is a brown rice based green tea that has a nutty, earthy sweetness to it that I now crave. 

I then took it one step further, and introduced Matcha into my life, and haven’t looked back. This was in 2014, and I’m grateful for the day my best friends introduced this emerald like gem to me. Think of Matcha like green tea on steroids. Seriously. It is potent stuff. Get this, Samurai, the noble warriors of medieval and early-modern Japan, drank Matcha Green Tea before going into battle due to the tea’s energizing properties. While all green tea naturally contains caffeine, the energy boost received from Matcha is largely due to its unique combination of other nutrients. The increased endurance from a cup of Matcha Green Tea can last up to 6 hours and because of the effects of L-Theanine, Matcha drinkers experience none of the usual side-effects of stimulants such as nervousness and hypertension, whic is why some people can’t drink coffee or have caffeine for that matter. Match is in a league of it’s own, it’s purely good, clean energy.

 

This jewel like liquid is the only tea that uses the the whole leaf, which is why it’s so powerful. It’s essentially ground up green tea leafs in all their glory, and is up to ten times more potent than a regular cup of green tea. If you’ve ever had it before you will know its effects and benefits, as each sip you take you feel like you’ve just spent a day at the Spa! It elicits a sense of well-being from the top of your head to the bottom of your toes. 

Today I wanted to share my recipe for my homemade Hazelnut Mylk Matcha Latte! You can now find Matcha lattes at most cafes, but they are usually around $6-$7, and I don’t love the nut mylk they use, as most of them are loaded with sugars and chemicals! Sooooo I make my own nut mylks (so much easier than you think), froth it, and whisk the Matcha, and voila, the best latte in town, right in the comforts of your own home. 

 

Let’s begin! 

 

MATCHA2

 

WHAT YOU NEED //

  • Nuts of choice – I chose hazelnuts for this, but I often make brazil nut, or pumpkin seed mylk
  • Dates
  • Pink or Sea salt
  • Cinnamon (optional)
  • Matcha (My favorite brand is MatchaNinja)
  • Bowl
  • Nut mylk bag or cheese cloth 
  • Glass container to store
  • Blender 
  • SUPER optional, but a frother! I just got one of these over a week ago, and I’m kinda obsessed. 

HAZELNUT MYLK //

  • Soak two cups of hazelnuts overnight or for a few hours, not to stress about this too much
  • Drain the soaked nuts
  • Place two cups of hazelnuts in your blenders
  • Add eight cups of water
  • Tiny dash of cinnamon
  • Tiny dash of pink or sea salt
  • One – two dates, depending on how sweet you like things! I use 1.5 as this makes a large batch
  • BLEND on high for 60 seconds
  • Grab a bowl and nut mylk bag OR cheesecloth. These are super cheap! I got mine for $6 at a local health food store. You should be able to find them at Whole Foods, your local health shop, Amazon, Bed Bath and Beyond, or check your grocery store for cheese cloth
  • Pour half of the blended mylk into the bag and squeeeeze
  • Discard pulp
  • Repeat, discard pulp
  • That’s it! Now pour it into a mason jar, glass container, etc….
  • FRESH nut mylk will last 4-5 days in the fridge when contained very well! 

 

LATTE //

  • Take 1/2 tsp. of Match and place it in the bottom of the mug. Whisk it with a very small amount of water. The goal here is break up all chunks! Matchaninja is amazing with regards to this, as it’s known for not clumping! 
  • Heat up Nut Mylk of choice very gently on the stove. 
  • OPTIONAL STEP: Once heated place it in a longer cup / glass and froth!!!! I love seeing it froth up.
  • Take Mylk and pour into your mug. 

And there you have it! A delicious, homemade, potent cup of nutrient dense, gem like elixir!

It seems like lots of steps, but once you have everything, and have made both of these regularly, you will have it down to under 10 minutes.I promise! Once you have the nut mylk, it takes a mere five minutes to make the latte. 

Do you make your own lattes? I don’t drink coffee lattes, as I just like my coffee black, and don’t always drink Matcha Lattes, as again I like it in it’s pure form too. But a few times a week I make a latte and it’s heavenly…
